CHELYABINSK REGION.

Russian Copper Company has held a public hearing regarding the renovation of Karabashmed, CJSC. As a result, a resolution was adopted about the possibility of conducting the work. It was also decided to create a Public Commission to monitor the progress of the updates at the production facility.

The project includes building a new sulfuric-acid plant, an oxygen plant, and a transformer substation, plus establishing a water-recycling system. About 8 billion rubles will be invested between 2012 and 2016, which includes 2.6 billion in 2012 alone.

RCC's press office told RusBusinessNews that Karabashmed, CJSC plans to begin the construction of the new sulfuric-acid plant in July, 2012, and the first shipments of equipment are scheduled to arrive in November.

By updating the chemical and metallurgical facility, the firm will be able to increase its production of blister copper by 1.5 times - up to 120,000 tons per year. Once the new sulfuric-acid plant is in operation, this will ensure the full disposal of sulfur dioxide.
