Eduard Rossel, the Sverdlovsk Oblast Governor, to Resign in 2009

28.04.2009 — News

THE SVERDLOVSK OBLAST.

Eduard Rossel is going to leave the Sverdlovsk Oblast Governor office in 2009. At his press conference on 28 April he said he was not considering re-appointment.

Mr. Rossel's term will be over in November 2009. Three months before that, the regional office of "Edinaya Rossiya (United Russia)", the party that won recent elections to the Sverdlovsk Oblast Legislative Assembly, will nominate three candidates for the position of the Governor. Then the President of the Russian Federation will select one to be appointed from the list, pending the regional parliament's approval.

As Konstantin Kiselyov, a political analyst, told RusBusinessNews, Mr. Rossel's statement may indicate that the Governor was offered a federal-level position in exchange for his current office.

Eduard Rossel, 71, has been Governor of the Sverdlovsk Oblast since 1991.
