Prior to the beginning of the meeting of the Council of Heads of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states in Ekaterinburg on 15 June 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will meet the re-elected Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. On Monday afternoon both leaders will arrive in the capital city of the Sverdlovsk Oblast that hosts the SCO and BRIC summits on 15-16 June.

Sources told RusBusinessNews that the head of Russia who arrived in Ekaterinburg about 14:00 is now staying in the city's Akademichesky district that is under construction, and is expected to meet the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Oblast Eduard Rossel.

The first meeting on the SCO summit agenda begins at 17:30 and is expected to send out a number of important political signals. In particular, the heads of states will discuss the situation regarding Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the issue of Afghanistan. The SCO is prepared to offer its support to the Western countries in respect of the latter. It should be noted that Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has also arrived in Ekaterinburg.
