Road Traffic in Ekaterinburg and Rome Will Be Alike

24.06.2009 — News

The Sverdlovsk Oblast.

In September 2009 Ekaterinburg will start the implementation of a traffic control system. The equipment that is used in the biggest Italian cities will be applied in Russia for the first time.

Inductive sensors built into the road surface are the key element of the system. They identify traffic jams and transfer the data to the special center, which defines the optimal operation mode for traffic lights. Thanks to the new equipment the traffic capacity of Ekaterinburg roads will increase by one-third. Similar systems are successfully used in 15 Italian cities, including Rome and Milan.

As the City Mayor's Office told RusBusinessNews, 30 most problematic cross roads will be equipped with the sensors by the end of 2009, 105 more crossroads next year. Based on the initial data from Consortium Odisseus (Italy), 100-150 million roubles are required for the solution of the Ekaterinburg traffic jam problem with the use of the system.
