Urals Federal University Will Be Established In Ekaterinburg

The Urals Federal University will open its doors in Ekaterinburg in 2010. It will be based on the First Russian President Yeltsin Urals State Technical University-UPI.
On 21 October the Russian President Dmitri Medvedev has signed a decree on the establishment of federal universities in the North-West, Volga, Urals, and Far East Federal Districts. The programme for the development of the Urals University which will be adopted in half a year's time envisages joining other state-owned higher education establishments and research organisations, State Science Academies and their regional branches to the university.
Regional government informed RusBusinessNews that at the moment there are more than two thirds of science organisations in the Urals are located in the Sverdlovsk Oblast. Academic science is represented by 22 institutes of the Urals Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. By 2020 the number of students at the Urals Federal University will amount to 65 thousand people a fifth of whom will be representing foreign countries.
1,500 hectares of land has been allocated for the construction of the University in Ekaterinburg. Construction costs may amount to 40 billion roubles.
