SVERDLOVSK REGION

For the first time, the regional stage of the Umnitsy i Umniki Olympiad will be held in the Sverdlovsk region. The Middle Urals tenth-graders will be able to submit applications for the qualifying round from February 1, 2023.

Organizers of the Olympiad in the Sverdlovsk region are the region's Ministry of Education and Youth Policy, Mikhail Shelkov's Empathy Charitable Foundation, and the Golden Section Foundation for the Support of Talented Children and Youth.

"In Russia, every schoolchild has probably heard of Umnitsy i Umniki TV show. I think it is no exaggeration to say that in the thirty years that the TV Olympiad has been held, the whole country has learned history, literature, and art along with the participants. This is one of the TV shows that will not cease to be in demand for years to come. It is therefore with special pleasure that we are launching the selection of the best brains for Umnitsy i Umniki in the Urals for the first time today. I am sure that there are many talented children studying in the Sverdlovsk region whom we will see next year at the finals. And those who prove themselves worthy of the award will definitely receive it," the Empathy press service quotes Mikhail Shelkov as saying.

The project is also supported by leading educational institutions of the region - the Ural Institute of Management - Branch of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, the Ural Federal University named after B.N. Yeltsin, the Humanitarian University, the Ural State Pedagogical University, the Institute for Development of Education of Sverdlovsk Region, the Centre for Supplementary Education of Sverdlovsk Region "Palace of Youth", RusBusinessNews reports.

"The launch could be an example of an effective collaboration between the regional education system and a private foundation, and attract more investment in the area in the future," the Empathy press service added.

In the meantime, the winners of the regional selection will each receive 100 thousand roubles from the Mikhail Shelkov Foundation and will travel to Moscow to film for free. Students from the Sverdlovsk region who enter the Moscow State Institute of International Relations after the Olympiad will receive a special scholarship of 50,000 roubles a month.

The start date for applications is February 1, 2023. As early as February 18, schools will host the first absentee selection stage in the form of an essay. Lists of successful students will be announced on March 10. These 10th graders will be invited to the second in-person final round, which will be held in April-May 2023. The finals will be held in a format based on the rules of the All-Russian Television Olympiad: with semi-final and final agons, medals, agonists, and theorists.

The winners of the Olympiad are the three participants of the second stage: the agonists - the winners of the last round (agon), and the theorists who have achieved the highest score (medal). The champions will take part in the Umnitsy i Umniki TV Olympiad in Moscow.

It should be remembered that Umnitsy i Umniki has been on Channel One since 1992. The winners of the project receive benefits for free admission to the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. The Olympiad will be held in the Sverdlovsk region for the first time. Yuri Pavlovich Vyazemsky, the author and permanent host of the TV Olympiad, will be personally assessing the participants at the in-person round in Ekaterinburg in spring 2023.
