SVERDLOVSK REGION

Verkhnyaya Salda will host the Titans Cup chess tournament for the first time. The stage of the Russian Cup is scheduled to take place from March 4 to March 11. More than 300 young players from different regions of the country will take part in the competition. They will compete in four age groups: Boys and girls up to 9, 11, and 13 years old, and boys and girls up to 15 years old, RusBusinessNews reports.

The tournament was organized by the Sverdlovsk Region Chess Federation and VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation with the financial support of the Empathy Charity Fund of Mikhail Shelkov, a shareholder of VSMPO-AVISMA. The competition was also supported by the Russian Chess Federation, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, and the Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports of the Sverdlovsk Region.

The Children's Cup program, which is included in the calendar schedule of the Russian Chess Federation and the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, consists of nine tournaments. The hosts of the competition will field 40 athletes from VSMPO-AVISMA's Debut corporate chess club, the corporation's press service noted.

"Children with high potential must be supported to achieve success, getting quality education, motivation from mentors, and a competitive environment. These are the principles that the Empathy Foundation and VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation adhere to when developing the chess school in Verkhnyaya Salda," said Mikhail Shelkov, – "We already see the active interest of the children, follow their results, and are happy to note that the town has become an important regional center of attraction for chess players over a few years, and very soon it will attract the strongest athletes from all over Russia."

Participants and spectators of the Titans Cup can look forward to an online broadcast of the competition, an engaging program, master classes, games, and various other activities. There are also plans to organize an online broadcast for fans.

School of Chess Literacy appeared in Verkhnyaya Salda in 2017. Over the six years, more than 4,000 first graders have gone through it. Children who have shown an aptitude for the ancient game are engaged in the Debut corporate club. Due to advancements in chess science, the city has evolved into a hub for diverse intellectual tournaments. The most important of these is the Grand Chess Festival in May, to which distinguished athletes are invited.

In 2023, Alexey Prokhorov, a pupil of Debut, won the Russian Chess Cup in the Yaroslavl region among athletes under 15 years old and became the champion of the Asian Youth Chess Championship among young men under 14 years old.

The Empathy Foundation, founded by Mikhail Shelkov in 2019, works in a variety of focus areas. It provides material support to teachers and educators, organizes free educational courses, provides targeted support to children's remedial school, active teachers, and honors school students in the Sverdlovsk region. In the first half of 2023, about 100 million rubles were allocated to support teachers and educators in Verkhnyaya and Nizhnyaya Salda.
