Road Construction in the Urals Falling Rapidly

12.05.2009 — News

The Chelyabinsk Oblast road construction and improvement programme for 2009-2011 will be cut. Originally estimated at 5.2 billion roubles, it had to be corrected through the financial crisis.

The total length of public automobile roads in the Chelyabinsk Oblast is 8,500 km. As of the end of last year, 8% of the roads reached their traffic capacity limit, whilst 10% were unable to support heavy-duty vehicles. 60 out of 288 region's bridges were not up to the capacity requirements; 26 flyovers needed urgent repair.

Over the three years it was planned to build 38 kilometres of new roads, improve 150 kilometres of roads, and build or repair 19 bridges. As the regional government representatives told RusBusinessNews, the updated programme will only embrace the most important objects.

In the Perm Krai, the 2009 road construction budget is 6.087 billion roubles, including 301 million roubles of federal funding. Last year the region spent 5.397 billion roubles on road construction, which was 1.2 billion roubles less than planned.
