THE SVERDLOVSK OBLAST.

Only 29% residents of the Sverdlovsk Oblast may state that they get high quality drink water in their apartments. The others are under the risk of falling ill from using the running water.

The regional Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities has informed RusBusinessNews that the water which does not meet the standards caused illness of about 600 people in 2008. Moreover, the official figures do not show the actual sickness rate. The statistics indirectly confirms that the half of the biologically purified water coming to the water supply system of the Sverdlovsk Oblast does not comply with the standards. More than a third of the water supply system needs to be urgently upgraded or replaced.

During the next 12 years the regional programme on pure water supply for the citizens will require 150 billion roubles of investments. Only 20% of the amount will come from the budget of the Sverdlovsk Oblast. Part of the amount may be provided by the Russian Government. The rest of the funds should be obtained as bank loans.

The costs of the effective water purification will be included in utility rates for citizens. Every year during the next three years the cost of water supply may increase by 25%.
