The Yakut Buffalo can move to Yamal

The Yamal Government intends to implement the project on buffalo breeding that was suspended due to the economic crisis. The animals can be purchased in Yakutia or Ukraine.

In 2007 the regional authorities decided to adopt the experience of animal breeding semi-open pastures from the province of Manitoba, Canada. 15 animals were to be transported from abroad as part of a Russian-Canadian project. The buffalo population in the Polar Urals foothills was scheduled to increase to up to 100 animals. The increased animal population could offer the future for expensive hunting tours.

As the representatives of the YaNAO Government told RusBusinessNews, due to the budget shortage the buffalo could not be purchased in Canada. The possibility to order animals from Yakutia or Ukraine is being reviewed now. The buffalo were delivered to Yakutia from Canada about 5 years ago. For several years their initial population of 30 has almost tripled.
