The annual 5th Grand Chess Festival drew over 600 chess players ranging in age from 5 to 60 from 18 Ural cities and towns. It was traditionally organized by the VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation.

The festival's honorary guest was Albert Stepanyan, Executive Director of the Sverdlovsk Region Chess Federation.

"I am pleased to welcome the festival's participants on behalf of Anatoly Karpov, Deputy of the State Duma, and Andrey Simanovsky, President of the Chess Federation of the Sverldlovsk region. I always enjoy coming to Verkhnyaya Salda. And I always admire festival organization and the accomplishments of your players. I am grateful to the VSMPO-AVISMA management for systematically continuing the wonderful Chess Literacy School project, which involves an increasing number of young chess players," he said to the attendees.

Graduation of the Chess Literacy School's next batch was timed by VSMPO-AVISMA to coincide with the festival. Of the 550 first-graders, 30 have already passed skill-categories, and 20 fulfilled standards for the third junior category.

Over the course of six days, there were tournaments for all levels of chess players, from novices to those with an international sports rating. These include the finals of the "Passed Pawn" tournament between Verkhnyaya Salda first graders, the individual championship of the city among children under 11 and under 17, the open rapid team tournaments for children and adult chess players, and team blitz tournaments, the corporation's press office told RusBusinessNews.

"Verkhnyaya Salda confidently leads in the Russian chess education system and consistently improves its standing in the game. Chess holds a special position in our corporate sport because it fosters strategic thinking and calculus, two skills that are in demand – always and everywhere," specified Olga Furtatova, head of VSMPO-AVISMA's HR department.

What drew the greatest attention from both participants and spectators was a simultaneous exhibition on 245 boards in commemoration of Verkhnyaya Salda's Anniversary. The city's titled chess players and young champions played nonstop games with their amateur opponents.
