Fishing Season Starts in Yamal

The annual fishing season has started in Yamal. Commercial fishing has been developed in Ob river basin, where the world's largest population of whitefish - including muksun and nelma - fatten.

The regional government representatives told RusBusinessNews that it is planned to capture over 14,900 tones of whitefish in 2009. Commercial fishery is one of the key sectors in Yamal's agro-industry. The region has developed an integrated technological complex for fishing, processing of raw materials, and distribution of finished goods.

About 7 fishing plants, 14 agricultural enterprises and 120 private farms are engaged in commercial fishing. OOO Salekhardsky Kombinat (Salekhard Combine), which is the largest fish processing plant in the region, received over 150 million in revenue for its products.
