20-Time Reduction of Foreign Car Imports to the Urals

The Urals Customs Directorate reported a sharp decrease in the consumer goods imports. RusBusinessNew was informed that the number of foreign products cleared through the customs of the Urals Federal District has dropped by 17% from October 2008 to February 2009. The number of passenger cars cleared has decreased almost 23 times: from 2 084 in October to 90 in February. In December last year the customs cleared 58,449 units of household appliances and in February the number was only 3,197. Although these figures do not give a full picture of imports to the UrFO (the suppliers go through the formal procedures primarily at the border or in Moscow), nevertheless the general trend is quite clear. In recent months car dealers in the Mid Urals have reported that cars in stock do not sell due to a sharp decrease in consumer demand making further orders from manufacturers pointless.
