India Starts Licensed Production of Russian "Flying Tanks"

13.08.2009 — News

THE SVERDLOVSK OBLAST.

The Republic of India will independently produce a significant part of components for T-90S tanks. On 24 August 2009 the licensed production of the Russian "flying tanks" will start in this country.

As RusBusinessNews was told by the press service of Rosoboronexport State Corporation, the volumes of production has not been disclosed yet. According to the information in Indian media, it is planned to produce 1 thousand tanks.

For Ural Railway Car Plant, the tank producer, this Indian development means losing a profitable customer. The cooperation between the plant located in the Sverdlovsk Oblast and the Indian army began in 2001 with a shipment of 210 T-90S tanks. In 2007, the second contract was signed whereby more than 300 tanks were to be shipped.

The Ural Railway Car Plant is currently experiencing an extreme shortage of orders for civilian products. The plant produces railway cars the demand for which has plunged at the time of crisis. Export shipments of T-90S helped improving the plant’s financial situation.
