THE CHELYABINSK OBLAST.
SMS Meer, a European conglomerate, will supply equipment for the new tube electric welding workshop of JSC Chelyabinsk Tube-Rolling Plant by the end of September 2009. The commissioning of this shop will enable the plant to make trunk pipeline 1,420 millimetre diameter pipes for JSC Gazprom and JSC Transneft.
The company informed RusBusinessNews that the new workshop is one of the largest investment projects of the company in the last 20 years. The total cost of the project is 500 million Euro. Annual production of single seam pipes of the diameter from 508 to 1,420 millimetres amounts to 600 thousand tons.
The demand for such pipes will be growing due to the implementation of two large projects – the Eastern Siberia - Pacific Ocean pipeline and the North Europe gas pipeline. The length of each one of them is several thousand kilometres. The material needed for the production of pipes is the thick sheet 5,000 millimetre wide, this will be supplied by OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works where the largest in Russia thick sheet mill-5000 has been started up in July 2009.
