Nizhniy Tagil is the administrative centre of the Gornozavodsky administrative district of the Sverdlovsk region, the large industry and culture centre of the Urals.
Total population is 375,000 people.
Historcal reference
At the end of the XVI century the Cossack Ataman Yermak made a field camp for his troops in the vicinity of the future city, having thus crossed the Europe-Asia water divide.
Economy
Today the city produces 7% of the Russian cast iron and 6% of steel and rolled metal goods. The largest companies in the city are the Nizhniy Tagil Steel Works, the Vysokogorsky Mining and Enrichment Plant, the Vysokogorsky Mechanical Works, Uralvagonzavod, the Nizhniy Tagil Boiler and Radiator Plant, and Uralkhimplast.
Culture & Education
The city has a drama theatre, a circus, several art galleries and exhibition halls, fine arts and history museums, as well as the literary and memorial museums of the local writers A.P. Bondin and D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak.
