Nizhniy Tagil is the administrative centre of the Gornozavodsky administrative district of the Sverdlovsk region, the large industry and culture centre of the Urals.

Total population is 375,000 people.

 

Historcal reference

At the end of the XVI century the Cossack Ataman Yermak made a field camp for his troops in the vicinity of the future city, having thus crossed the Europe-Asia water divide.
October 8 (19) 1722 - when the Vyya works produced the first iron - is considered to be the date when Nizhniy Tagil was founded. The works was established by the Demidov family. The Nizhniy Tagil metal goods with the "Old Sable" mark became famous all over the world. This metal was used for the construction of the Liberty Statue in New York.
The first Russian steam engine and the first Russian bicycle were built in Nizhniy Tagil.
The local factories were the first in the world to use electricity.

Economy

Today the city produces 7% of the Russian cast iron and 6% of steel and rolled metal goods. The largest companies in the city are the Nizhniy Tagil Steel Works, the Vysokogorsky Mining and Enrichment Plant, the Vysokogorsky Mechanical Works, Uralvagonzavod, the Nizhniy Tagil Boiler and Radiator Plant, and Uralkhimplast.
Nizhniy Tagil is the venue for the International Military Equipment and Ammunition Exhibition "Russian Expo Arms" and the International Defence Exhibition "Russian Defence Expo".

Culture & Education

The city has a drama theatre, a circus, several art galleries and exhibition halls, fine arts and history museums, as well as the literary and memorial museums of the local writers A.P. Bondin and D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak.
Nizhniy Tagil is proud of its State Pedagogical Institute. There are branches of several other universities in the city: these are the Stolichnaya Academy for Finance and Humanities, the Ural State Technical University - UPI, and the Ural Institute of Economics, Management and Law.
